Historically, ISPs have claimed it is too cumbersome or complicated to detect and remove newsgroups with potentially illegal or harmful content in them. We believe the ISP must be accountable for the content they host and provide to their customers - especially if it might hurt them or even get them arrested! Perhaps they've turned a blind eye because there was never a tool to help in this endeavor.
www.PENETRATIONTEST.com created Whistleblower to scan NNTP News servers for active newsgroups from lists that we developed over a year of NNTP News group surveying. These automated surveys are ongoing so our lists will always be up-to-date.
Whistleblower provides a number of benefits: In a matter of minutes, the potentially harmful newsgroups can be detected and removed from the news server, and logs can be searched to determine who has been downloading (and in some cases, uploading) the questionable content. This has practical impact on ISP and corporate liability, and law enforcement investigations.
A few things to note about Whistleblower:
- The web version of Whistleblower does not display the newsgroup names. We don't want to turn this into a miscreant search engine.
- Enter a username and password only if necessary to scan the server. Leave blank otherwise, as the scan will likely fail if you try to log in when you don't need to. The username and password is never tracked or logged by us. It is used only to log in and conduct the scan.
- During the scan, do not leave the page. If you do, the scan will complete, but you will not see the results. Status is displayed so you know what it is scanning and when.
- Upon completion of the scan, a score is provided for the presence of active groups containing the following content: child pornography, beastiality, pirtated movies, music and software. This score is the percentage of active groups on the news server from the number of known groups in our database. It does not flag inactive groups.
- A top 10 list of offending news servers is then listed for comparison. The only way to remove a news server from the top 10 list is to remove the offending newsgroups and scan again.
