Going Down! - PENETRATIONTEST.com will go offline tomorrow (July 28) for a core router update. We'd like to think this should take 10 minutes, but anyone who's done this knows a 10 minute job can take up to 2 hours. The update includes adding RAM to the core routers, additional fiber, and ethernet cable updates. Failover testing might make the connection somewhat flakey once we get back up. So if you notice anything weird like that, you'll know why.

Our Whistleblower project is finally online!

In our earliest tests on random NNTP sites around the world, it is clear that questionable content is readily available through many Internet Service Providers. Subjects such as child pornography or bestiality are readily available from the majority of sites we have tested so far. And Web filters do not filter this content!

A while ago, we tested it on our local ISPs Rogers and Sympatico. Following is a comparison of the results. Note the Percentages are a comparison of the number of newsgroups in our database, versus the number of those newsgroups we find active on the scanned NNTP news server:

"Potentially Harmful or Illegal NNTP Content Comparison"
Content Type / ISPRogers Sympatico
Warez 55% 35%
Music 85% 58%
Movies 97% 63%
Pedophilia 24% 8%
Bestiality 83% 25%
Total 74% 39%

Rogers gets their news from Giginews, and Sympatico gets their from Bell Nexxia. It appears Bell Nexxia has done some work at eliminating the child pornography newsgroups, but a few linger on. Clearly from our scans, Rogers provides a lot more questionable content to their users than Sympatico, but both have a significant amount of cleaning up to do. Note that since this scan, Rogers has removed their NNTP news service altogether.

We are excited to be able to offer this type of service, and hope that you will find the future results interesting. Our Whistleblower Top 10 List of Offenders, and interactive NNTP site testing will soon provide very interesting statistics.

Please note that Whistleblower is still in beta development. There are a couple of known bugs which we will fix soon. The main bug is that sometimes the Top 10 Offenders list gets blown away. Otherwise, all of the scans we've conducted in the current version succeed. Let us know if you find any site that it doesn't seem to be able to scan properly.
